Keynote Speakers

Limbal Headshot 1Loira Limbal currently serves as the Vice President + Producers’ Lab Director for Firelight Media. Limbal is also a Latina filmmaker and activist who directed and produced Estilo Hip Hop, a documentary that chronicles the lives of three hip hop activists from Brasil, Chile, and Cuba. Estilo Hip Hop was an official selection of the Tribeca All Access Institute and it aired nationally on PBS in June 2009.

For the past decade, Limbal has dedicated herself to fusing arts and activism. She has worked at various community-based organizations in New York City including The Point Community Development Corporation, The Dominican Women’s Development Center, and Sista II Sista.

In 2006, she founded The Reel X Project, a social justice and creative filmmaking space for young women of color in the Southwest Bronx. Limbal received a B.A. in History from Brown University and is a graduate of the Third World Newsreel’s Film and Video Production Training Program. She has received awards from the Bronx Council on the Arts, the Open Society Institute, the Ford Foundation, and the Lisa Sullivan Fund.



kodzoProf. Kodzo Gavua is an Associate Professor of Archaeology and Heritage Studies at the University of Ghana, Legon. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree and a Master of Arts degree in Archaeology from the University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, as well as a Master of Arts degree in International Affairs and a Bachelor of Arts honours degree in Archaeology and Philosophy from the University of Ghana, Legon. Professor Gavua’s areas of specialization are Public Archaeology, Ethnography, Anthropology of Tourism, Economic Anthropology, Visual Anthropology, and Museology. He has over twenty-two years’ teaching, research and administrative experience at the University of Ghana, Legon, and at the University of Calgary, Canada. Creditably, he is emotionally balanced, sociable and cordially works with a cross-section of people.

In addition to teaching and supervising graduate and undergraduate students, his job-related activities include researching global interactions, cultural transformations and socio-economic development in Ghana. Prof Gavua also engage in cultural resource management and he had had, support from various international and local agencies, directed a number of high profile research projects in Ghana and participated in other such projects in Canada, Cameroon, and Belize.
